The question in the picture is what I would like to ask you. If you answered "no" to wearing a print with a solid background and "no" to mixing different prints together, what is stopping you? Is it that you think the colors are too bold? Do you think that prints and patterns are unflattering to you? Do you think multiple patterns together will look too busy? If these are some of your thoughts, they are all valid.
What if I told you about three easy and simple ways to style prints and patterns? Will that inspire you to try and incorporate these suggestions into your wardrobe? If three tips are too many for you to start with, what about choosing just one? Now, are you thinking maybe?
There are so many ways to mix prints and patterns and I have tried several suggested tips. I have to say, I was pleased with each example I tried. However, there are 3 tips about styling prints and patterns that are my go-to when I want to switch up my look and add a little boldness to my ensemble for that day.
First one: Styling a print using just an accessory. If wearing two or more prints seem overwhelming to you and a bit intimidating, add a scarf in a print, an earring with a pattern that has a least two colors, or my favorite, a handbag. Keep the outfit in a solid color and jazz up the outfit with a print or pattern in the handbag. Here, I chose two ensembles in neutral colors (both in solid colors) to bring attention to the black and white striped bucket style handbag with a bow. The handbag is making a bold statement, but it is not overshadowing the rest of the outfit. They are all in harmony together. The third outfit, I styled using another neutral color but in tonal colors of beige and an animal print clutch.
Soooo, if you are looking for a way to incorporate prints and patterns in your wardrobe without making a bold statement, adding an accessory with a print or pattern might be right for you!

Second one: Styling a print using just an accessory. If mixing two different prints or patterns is out of your comfort zone, then start with a print or pattern in a top or bottom and keep the rest of the outfit solid. The pattern in this A-line tweed skirt is multicolored and I love the silhouette of the skirt. This skirt alone makes a statement, so I just added a solid color sweater as an accent to the printed skirt.

Another way to incorporate a single print or pattern into your wardrobe is by styling an animal print. Adding animal prints can be a way to start incorporating a print or pattern into your style. I paired a jaguar print sweater dress with black leggings. You can also add a print or pattern in a coat. The snakeskin coat is a print that can stand alone, another pattern does not need to be added. It makes a bold statement by itself. Kept the bottom neutral so it would not clash with the coat. One single print represented in all three ensembles, not two print or pattern mixed. This isn't so daunting to try, right?

Third one: Balancing prints. Looking at the size of the prints for this particular styling is important. Pair small prints with large prints Make the larger print the dominate feature in the outfit. For this outfit, I combined two prints, stripes and polka dots. The polka dot is the more dominate print but the subtle small stripes in the coat complement the polka dot and they both balance each other.

I know I said 3 sources of inspiration for styling prints and patterns, but I have one more. It is kind of like a bonus. This outfit is a two for one in styling prints. In addition to balancing prints, another suggestion for styling prints and patterns is to mix prints and patterns in the same tonal range. Although, this look is styled with polka dots and stripes; the colors in the outfit are brown. Different color browns but all in the same color family.

After reading this article, I hope you are inspired to try mixing prints and patterns into your wardrobe. If you are thinking of styling prints and patterns but don't want to dive right in; just start by dipping your toe into this style fashion with the suggestions, I mentioned. I believe you will love it!

<![CDATA[Great Thrift Store Finds!]]>Wed, 16 Feb 2022 14:51:01 GMThttp://fasmarketplace.com/discovering-my-personal-style/great-thrift-store-findsWhen shopping for your wardrobe, ever consider searching at a thrift store? If someone were to ask me that question two years ago, my answer would have been no. A year ago, I would have said on occasion. Fast forward 3 months later, my answer is yes. Don't get me wrong; I still love shopping at my favorite department stores, but lately, I have snagged several stylish ensembles at a great deals from local thrift stores. Looks like thrift stores and I are developing a styling relationship!
This snake skin jacket and pleated dress slacks were purchased at a Salvation Army store. I was looking for a cream or ivory color belt, and didn't want to spend a lot of money. So I decided to get thrifty. As I searched through the store for a belt (That was my main purpose for going into the store), I saw the dress pants on the rack, tried them on; perfect fit! I then walked toward the counter to purchase my new find. There hanging on a corner clothes rack was the snakeskin jacket. Well, I could not leave without taking a look at it. So I tried it on. Another perfect fit. The price was right, so of course it was added the jacket to my purchase. The pleated dress pants, $8.99, the snakeskin jacket, $12.99 total purchase $22.98 with tax.
By the way, I didn't find a belt.
Here's another great find at a thrift store. This turtleneck sweater cape came from Goodwill, and I must say, am quite pleased with this store. I have shopped there this store at least three times and was never disappointed at every visit.
I will talk about those items in another thrift store blog. For now, I want to discuss this turtleneck sweater cape that I found at a great price. The fabric used to make this sweater feels really good. It is a blend of wool, nylon, and 50% of the material is viscosa (a substitute for silk) less expensive material to use, but the quality is still very soft. Only $6.99 for the sweater!!

<![CDATA[New Year's Eve Plans?]]>Wed, 22 Dec 2021 15:47:25 GMThttp://fasmarketplace.com/discovering-my-personal-style/new-years-eve-plansIf you are one of the many people that are going to celebrate bringing in the new year, plan ahead. Whether you are going for a casual look or all out glam, start thinking about your attire now. I played dress up to give some ideas about how to style ensembles for the festive occasion.

Look 1: This is a full-on glam look. If you are feeling bold and want to standout, then this is the look for you. A gold sequin dress with floral accents. The bold and vibrant colors display elegance at its best. Since there is a lot of details on the dress, I kept the jewelry simple. Only adding tear drop earrings and an ankle strap sandal to complete the look. I stepped up the glam in the makeup department to compliment the style of the dress. I added a little color to the eyes. All over the eyes, I used gold eye shadow, in the crease of the eye, I chose a blue green color, brown mascara and dark chocolate eye liner. For the lips. chestnut lip liner and a neutral brown tone lipstick. This look is definitely a showstopper.

Look 2: I styled a tank top with a floor length tulle skirt, faux fur shrug, tear drop earrings, tear drop necklace, and bracelet. I wanted to keep the makeup natural but with a little color. I used three eye shadows. All over the eye, I used a neutral color, in the crease of the eyes, I used a gold eye shadow that has a touch of shine, on the brow bone, I used a copper color. To finish the eyes, I added brown mascara and a dark chocolate eye liner. For the cheeks, I chose a neutral brown tone, for the lips, chestnut lip liner and a neutral brown tone lipstick. When it is applied, it gives a pop of color to the lip. This entire look is giving me "Old Hollywood Glam."

Look 3: I paired a faux black leather double layered blouse with a floral print belted high-low double-layered skirt. For the accessories, I included a pink floral necklace with gold accents, a red ankle strap kitten heel shoe, and a black clutch purse. Simple but chic look for the holiday. The skirt gives off a festive vibe.
