Valerie Bates, Skincare Artisan I am a 30 year old mother of three, who found a passion for making natural soaps, cleansers and body butters. This all began when my oldest daughter started experiencing severe allergic reactions to store brought products. It started as a way to give her some relief, then eventually turned into a bonding and calming activity. When other mothers began to approach me with questions and suggestions based on before and after photos I had posted on social media, I found that my passion could also become profitable. All products are handmade with love using natural and organic ingredients as well as many essential oils. Although I sell products, I also make videos showing others how to make the product as well as the necessary ingredients. Healthy hair and skincare can make a significant impact on one's confidence as well as offer relief from allergens. |

Featured Artist, Cynthia Johnson Actress and Model I started modeling in the (DMV) area over 25 years ago. As a seasoned curvy model, I have been afforded the opportunity to walk for some of the best designers, fashion show producers and production companies in New York, Philadelphia and the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) areas. I am additionally grateful for several opportunities to model for Major Department Stores such as Lord and Taylor, Macy’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. I have walked in numerous Fashion Weeks which showcased the best designers on the East Coast. As a result of these vast experiences, I had the opportunity to have been featured in local magazines, newspapers on-line fashion spreads and have appeared on several fashion segments on television and cable networks. I am also an on-line Brand Ambassador for a clothing and an accessory company. Approximately 4 years ago in March, I retired from the Federal Government after over 30 years of Federal Service and have never regretted that decision. I attended the University of the District of Columbia while working part-time and started out working as a Clerk-Typist. I ended my career in Senior Management serving as Acting Chief of Communications, with a staff of 8. After retiring I wanted to continue to pursue my passion for modeling and getting into Acting. As a result, I have landed commercial and promotional print work and have appeared in two HBO Movies as a background actress, one local film that is being submitted to film festivals and currently appearing in Netflix’s The Bridgerton Experience as a cast member. Fashion Designer I am Bindu Dennis, a native of Liberia and one of the 16 children. I left my native county, Liberia, due to civil war. The Ivory Coast, a neighboring country, became my home for for some years. After relocating to the United States, I pursued my Master's Degree in Social Work, from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. I currently work as a marketing coordinator at a mental health agency. Creating a fashion line has always been a passion of mine, even while pursuing my graduate degree. Bold, beautiful, rich, and vibrant African patterns and fabric have always intrigued me. So I decided to create a fashion line that would showcase my African roots. The idea of creating an African-inspired swimwear collection came about in 2014. Although my journey for my African fashion line started in 2014, it was December 2021 when I finally opened my online store for the swimwear collection. Soon I will be dropping the athletic wear collection and other modern African styles. Zoe's African Fashion is an online African-inspired fashion collection. I have constructed sophisticated and chic swimwear I know men and women will look and feel confident in as they embrace and experience the African culture through my designs. Because I of my obsession with details, the bold colors, vibrant patterns, trendy designs, top-of-the-line fabrics, and edgy cut-outs guarantee that my customers will stand out whether they are relaxing poolside, strolling on the beach, working out, or on any culturally celebratory occasion. Zoe Isaac, Fashion, Jewelry & Fragrance Designer I was bitten by the design bug at the age of 8, when I would spend summer afternoons watching my grandmother make patterns out of newspaper and create garments for my mother and I. My mother would also make us semi-matching outfits; and I fondly remember shopping for fabric in my hometown of New York and totally being mesmerized by all of the dazzling fabric colors and textures. I sewed my first skirt, sans pattern, at 8 years old.... it was either royal blue or purple velvet with some interesting trim remnant and a zipper! The fit wasn't bad either. My passion for all things artistic never waned, even though I let what I believed was my reality take over for some moments. I am a designer, an artist and a closet musician; and through the venues of interior design, I have freed myself to express and create without inhibition. Through this process, I have come in contract with some the world's most beautiful and giving spirits - something I intend to do for the rest of my life. I was torn for a moment in wondering which area of design to concentrate my efforts and settled on tow of the three as they are complementary. My company offers full services in both areas. |

Akin Walker, Skin care artisan MV Soaps. I'm Akin Walker, Founder of MV Soaps. When other black men try our products and realize our brand is all about them, they are astounded. Before I started this journey, I was frustrated by the lack of quality, natural skincare products catered to my needs - moisturizing and nourishing with fragrances that appealed to my fly. When I dug deeper, I was amazed to learn that the government classifies many skincare products black men use as detergent. First, I tried other natural skincare brands. While I was satisfied to know keeping my skin healthy with products I was using, I still did not see myself represented in any of the products. I decided to do something about it. I was introduced to cold process soap making and began to create new formulations in my kitchen. The rest is history. MV, the name of the brand, is the namesake of my two beautiful sons, Micaiah and Vonan. It also stands for "Men Validated", a phrase that speaks to the brand ethos and culture: that black men need to feel seen and understood. On a mission to annihilate ashiness and advocate for mental health Around the time I launched this brand, I lost a childhood friend to alcohol addiction. Now, MV dedicates 10% of all profits to initiatives that improve mental health outcomes for black men.mvsoaps.co/ Follow on Social Media: |

Mesh Macaulay Oumuwa handbags are designed in the U.S. and produced by local artisans and small to medium enterprises in several African countries. Oumuwa means "you are beautiful" in the Oshiwambo language of Namibia. It began from Mesh Macaulay’s, the founder, love for traditional African textile. Based on that, she found an opportunity to use these textiles in bags to showcase and generate income in local communities. While traveling to many African countries, she loved experiencing the local cultures, beautiful people, and amazing cuisines. She also loved exploring the local markets, which is where she discovered and fell in love with traditionally woven cloths across the continent. She was no stranger to African cloths. However, she had no idea that these beautiful handwoven fabrics existed in most African countries. These cloths, such as the Kente, have existed for centuries, and each country has its own. She began purchasing African cloths in every country she visited. This is why she created Oumuwa; to share and educate the world about these traditional cloths through her handbags. Oumuwa takes great pride in supporting African entrepreneurs; from those weaving, to the dedicated bag makers. To that end, most of the work that goes into producing its bags is done in several African countries. By doing this, we provide income generating opportunities to women-owned and family-owned small businesses. |

I write my autobiography of resilience one day at a time. As an African immigrant, as a black man, as a gay man, I understand what it feels like to labor against a narrative that invalidates you. My spirituality, my music and my cherished relationships compel me to live authentically. By doing so, I empower those who feel powerless; I lift others because I am standing on the shoulders of many. A native Liberian raised in Syracuse, New York, I identify with the varied iterations of blackness birthed from the African Diaspora. I'm influenced by what makes my soul dance, creating music because my higher power breathed music into me. I sing because God is! |

Johanna Kalin, Metal Jewelry Artisan I grew up in New York City where art is everywhere- within the 5 boroughs there are 375 museums, 96 orchestras, 24 performing arts centers, 7 botanical gardens, 5 zoos and 1 aquarium. Not only that, much of my inspiration came from street art and art street vendors that adorn the streets of New York. I never thought of myself as an artist and didn’t start making jewelry until I was in my early 30’s. My love for unique jewelry and the glamour that jewelry can magically make you feel drove my passion to take a class in metalsmith. I started out making statement cuffs – the cuffs reminded me of the strength I have as a woman. Not only that many of my cuffs have a hint of sexiness and femineity that reminds me to nurture myself hence Nurture Designs began. I work with metals including brass, copper, and sterling silver. My work focuses on texture and detail. I use several different methods from forging to firing to hammering. Many of the pieces are statement pieces allowing one to express themselves as bold, adventurous, and powerful. My designs and style of work uses gradual movement of the metal through different techniques to create a unique design. The uniqueness of my work and the individuality it brings to my customers keeps me in the studio. |

Janelle Washington, Paper Cut Artist Janelle Washington is a self-taught paper cut artist from Virginia. She graduated from VCU with a BFA in Fashion Design and afterward found interest in paper cutting. Her artwork explores themes of history, identity, and beauty in African American culture. Through the simplicity of paper, Janelle creates images that showcase African Americans' courage, achievements, and grace in difficult situations. Paper reminds her of her ancestors, how from humble beginnings, a transformation can take place, creating something extremely extraordinary. Through positive and negative spaces, she creates patterns, symbols, and silhouettes that work simultaneously to construct a multifaceted design. Her paper cuts retell a story of the past to current and future generations by adding a present-day perspective of empowerment and reflection. She has permanent silhouettes housed at the Smithsonian National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and Downing-Gross Community Arts Center in Newport News, Virginia. Janelle is currently illustrating a children’s book, and her silhouette of Breonna Taylor with the #SayHerName campaign was featured in the Oprah magazine, September 2020 issue. She is also a member of The Guild of American Papercutters. |
